Trans-Kalahari The Long Way
A 1,400-kilometre journey through Botswana where distance, heat, corrugations and isolation matter more than technical difficulty.
The Trans-Kalahari is not a route defined by technical obstacles. There are no extreme gradients, rock gardens or unpredictable river crossings. Instead, it tests patience, preparation, mechanical sympathy and the ability to remain self-sufficient in a remote environment.
A long ride through open country
I covered approximately 1,400 kilometres through Botswana over several days, travelling across the broad, open landscape of the Kalahari. Depending on how much time is allowed for detours and exploration, the route is best completed over five to seven days.
The riding surface varies continuously. Long sections of gravel and sand are linked by extended tar transitions, while the surrounding landscape remains remarkably consistent: flat, semi-arid grassland stretching almost uninterrupted towards the horizon.
At first glance, the route appears straightforward. It is only after several hours in the saddle that the true character of the Trans-Kalahari begins to reveal itself.
The real challenge is cumulative
The greatest challenges are not steep terrain or technical riding. They are heat, distance, vibration and isolation.
Some gravel sections are heavily corrugated. Riding across kilometres of washboard surface places sustained strain on the motorcycle, luggage systems and rider. Every mounting point, fastener and bracket is tested continuously. Anything that is not properly secured will eventually work loose.
The Trans-Kalahari does not usually stop you with one dramatic obstacle. It wears away at poor preparation, one kilometre at a time.
Corrugations are physically demanding as well. Maintaining excessive speed may initially feel smoother, but it increases risk and places unnecessary strain on the motorcycle. Slowing down too much can make the surface equally uncomfortable. I found the best approach was to settle into a controlled, sustainable pace and allow the motorcycle to move beneath me rather than fighting it.
Heat is the other constant factor. Daytime temperatures can become severe, particularly during the warmer months. The combination of heat, dry air and sustained riding can dehydrate a rider far more quickly than expected. Regular hydration stops are essential, even when you do not feel thirsty.
Pressure management matters
Tyre pressure management plays a significant role on this route. Running pressures too high on corrugated gravel transfers every impact directly through the suspension and into the rider. It also reduces traction and allows the motorcycle to deflect more easily off loose stones and ridges.
Dropping the pressures slightly can improve comfort and control, but caution is required. Pressures that are too low increase the risk of rim damage and punctures, particularly when travelling at speed or carrying a heavily loaded motorcycle.
Deep sand appears in sections and requires a relaxed riding style. Momentum is important, but excessive speed is not. Standing on the foot pegs, keeping a light grip on the handlebars and allowing the front wheel to move naturally made the motorcycle considerably easier to manage.
Adjust conservatively, account for luggage weight and speed, and reinflate before long tar sections.
Never pass a reliable fuel stop
Fuel range must be calculated before departure. Some sections between reliable fuel stops exceed 200 kilometres, and availability cannot always be assumed. A filling station shown on a map may be closed, temporarily out of fuel or operating on limited hours.
I treated every available fuel stop as an opportunity to refill, regardless of how much fuel remained in the tank.
The motorcycle should have sufficient range to complete the longest planned section with a meaningful reserve. Additional fuel capacity is strongly recommended, particularly when exploring less frequently travelled deviations from the main route.
Fuel consumption also changes with surface conditions, wind, luggage load and riding speed. Deep sand and corrugated gravel can increase consumption noticeably compared with normal tar riding.
Water is non-negotiable
I allowed a minimum of five litres of drinking water per rider per day, with additional capacity during hotter conditions. Water should be distributed across more than one container so that a single damaged bottle or bladder does not compromise the entire supply.
It is also worth carrying electrolyte replacement. Drinking large volumes of water without replacing salts can leave a rider feeling fatigued, light-headed and unable to concentrate.
The distances may appear manageable on paper, but a breakdown or puncture can turn a routine day into several hours of exposure. Water reserves must be based on that possibility, not only on the expected riding time.
Inspect every load-bearing point
Before starting the route, I inspected every major mounting point on the motorcycle, including:
- Luggage racks and pannier mounts
- Engine protection and bash plate fasteners
- Foot pegs and controls
- Exhaust and heat shields
- Battery terminals
- Wheel and axle fasteners
- Chain tension and lubrication
- Suspension components
Thread-locking compound should be used where appropriate, and all essential tools must be accessible without completely unpacking the motorcycle.
A proper puncture repair kit and compact compressor are essential. A basic hand pump may be adequate for small pressure adjustments, but it becomes frustrating and exhausting when reseating or reinflating a tyre in extreme heat.
Spare fuses, cable ties, electrical tape, basic wiring repair materials and a selection of common fasteners are also worth carrying.
Settle into the Kalahari’s rhythm
The Trans-Kalahari rewards patience. Riders who approach the route as a high-speed challenge quickly consume fuel, water and energy. They also increase the likelihood of tyre damage, mechanical failure and fatigue.
I found the ride became far more enjoyable once I stopped measuring progress only in kilometres. The Kalahari has its own rhythm. The landscape changes slowly, distances feel longer than expected and the horizon never seems to get any closer.
The best approach is steady progress, regular stops and constant awareness of the motorcycle, the weather and your own physical condition.
There is a particular silence in the Kalahari that is difficult to describe. When the engine is switched off, there may be nothing but wind moving through the grass and the occasional sound of wildlife in the distance. That isolation is part of the attraction, but it also demands respect.

Built for the long way
The Trans-Kalahari is not the most technically difficult ride in Southern Africa, but it is one of the most demanding in terms of preparation, endurance and self-reliance.
Its challenges build gradually rather than appearing as a single dramatic obstacle. Corrugations, heat, distance and isolation work together, testing both rider and motorcycle over several consecutive days.
